As expected Mike Remmers Jersey , Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski remained in the concussion protocol Wednesday for New England’s first Super Bowl practice in Minnesota.

According to a pool report of the workout, Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Gronkowski took part in non-contact drills and is ”working his way back.” The Patriots worked out for two hours in their only full-padded practice of the week leading up to Sunday’s matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Also limited were defensive linemen Deatrich Wise (concussion) and cornerback Malcolm Butler (illness).

Quarterback Tom Brady practiced fully, wearing black tape on his injured right hand.

Gronkowski has been in the league’s concussion protocol after taking a hit in the AFC championship game.

Gronkowski said at a promotional appearance for the ”Madden 18” video game Tuesday night that he would leave his game status up to team doctors.

After a rough debut, Cleveland Indians rookie Shane Bieber has found his routine.

Edwin Encarnacion and Lonnie Chisenhall hit back-to-back homers, Bieber pitched six strong innings and the Indians beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-1 on Wednesday night.

Bieber (3-0) struck out seven to become the seventh pitcher in baseball’s modern era to strike out six or more batters in each of his first four major league starts. After giving up four runs in 5 2/3 innings in his first outing, Bieber has given up just two runs in his last three starts and lowered his ERA to 2.22.

”It’s just being able to fall into a routine and just get a little more comfortable within that routine and within the clubhouse here and with the guys and all that Mark Bavaro Jersey ,” Bieber said. ”That goes a long way to being able to establish what you want to do.”

The Indians avoided a series sweep and have won eight of 10. Cleveland starters improved to 17-2 with a 2.26 ERA across 26 starts in series finales, including wins in their last nine decisions.

”For a young kid when runners are on and things start to happen, he seems to pitch more maturely than his age would indicate,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. ”He starts throwing his breaking ball, gets some chase, doesn’t panic Eli Manning Jersey , game doesn’t speed up. That’s a real nice trait for anybody, let alone a kid that’s got four major league starts.”

Bieber jumped on a first-pitch fastball from Jack Flaherty in the fourth for a double, his first major league hit.

Jose Martinez snapped Bieber’s scoreless innings streak at 14 innings with a one-out RBI single in the third.

”I thought he had a good breaking ball,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said of Bieber. ”It must have been a little different from than what guys have seen lately, you could tell some of the swings even in counts where they might have been looking for it might have been off a bit.”

Encarnacion and Chisenhall gave the Indians a 2-0 lead in the second, marking Cleveland’s fifth back-to-back home runs this season.

Francisco Lindor walked and Michael Brantley doubled to spark a two-run third that extended the Indians’ lead to 4-0. Tyler Naquin doubled home another run in the sixth.

Francona credited a loose atmosphere after the Indians dropped the first two in the series.

”It’s not necessarily about being silly but it’s about you don’t want to just be tight Archie Manning Jersey ,” Francona said. ”We already lost a couple tough games and it’s nice to come back and play a good one with a day off tomorrow and a long flight.”

Flaherty (3-3) went four innings, his shortest outing this season as the Cardinals had their four-game winning streak snapped. It followed perhaps his most dominant start, in which he carried a no-hitter for 6 1/3 innings against Milwaukee on Friday.

”Those two home runs were missed spots and I just wasn’t able to execute,” Flaherty said. ”They hit some balls that fell.”

Matt Carpenter walked, doubled and scored a night after scoring five runs and getting five hits.

      TRAINING ROOM

Indians: RHP Carlos Carrasco (right elbow contusion) threw a bullpen session and will throw about 65 pitches on a rehab assignment Saturday at Double-A Akron.

Cardinals: SS Paul DeJong (left hand fracture) is scheduled to meet with doctors Thursday with the hopes of being cleared to head out for a rehab assignment.

      UP NEXT

Indians: RHP Trevor Bauer (7-5, 2.44 ERA) will kick off a three-game series against Oakland and RHP Paul Blackburn (1-2 Chuck Foreman Jersey , 8.83 ERA) on Friday. Bauer is 1-2 with a 4.44 ERA in five career starts against the A’s.

Cardinals: RHP Miles Mikolas (8-2, 2.69 ERA) will get the start as St. Louis hosts Atlanta and RHP Julio Teheran (5-5, 4.52 ERA) in the first of a three-game set Friday. Mikolas threw 2 1/3 scoreless relief innings in his only career appearance against the Braves on Aug. 15, 2012.

Liam Kirk was on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean Junior Seau Jersey , about 4,600 miles away from Dallas, on Saturday when he became the first player born and trained in England to be selected in the NHL draft.

Early in the seventh and final round of the draft, the Arizona Coyotes took the 18-year-old Kirk with the 189th overall pick .

”To finally see my name on the board was just incredible,” Kirk said by phone from England. ”And to get a call from the GM was even better, just to know that’s the place I’m going. And that’s what I’m aiming to be, and to play my NHL career.”

The 6-foot, 161-pound Kirk played this season for Sheffield Steelers in the Elite Ice Hockey League, the highest level of competition in the United Kingdom, and for a team where the average age is 28. He had nine goals and seven assists in 52 games for the Steelers in his second season with the team.

Even though cricket and soccer are much more popular sports in England, Kirk already was dreaming about playing for Sheffield when he was only about 6 years old and going to Steelers games with his parents and older brother. He started to learn about the NHL within a couple of years.

Tim Bernhardt, Arizona’s director of amateur scouting Tyreek Hill Jersey , said NHL Central Scouting identified Kirk. The Coyotes then sent one of their scouts in Europe to see him, and more followed.

”He’s a thin kid, needs a lot of physical development, but they said he’s got a good idea of the game, and his natural skills were very good,” Bernhardt said.

Born in Rotherham, Kirk this year became the first player born and trained in England to attend the NHL’s pre-draft scouting combine in Buffalo. Now he is the first to be drafted, and he wants to be the first to play in the NHL.

”I just want to prove myself, and prove I can play,” said Kirk, who will soon move to North America to start playing here.

The Coyotes were among the teams that met with Kirk at the combine, and he knew there was a chance that they would take him. But he didn’t know for sure while watching the draft with his family.

His name finally got called Saturday night in England B.J. Goodson Jersey , six hours ahead of Dallas time, where it was early afternoon when he got picked.

”He wants to be here. He’s coming over here to play now,” Bernhardt said. ”He’s played in the men’s league. It’s hard for him to find a spot to play because he’s too good for the juniors. … You’re not going to find that kind of skill in the seventh round, so let’s go for it and see where we can get it to.”

TAMPA, Fla. — A potential Stanley Cup Final preview will be on display Sunday as the league-leading Nashville Predators visit the Tampa Bay Lightning.

A late-season surge by the Predators has them in front in the chase for the Presidents’ Trophy. Tampa Bay occupied that spot for most of the season before a mini-slump late in the season and is three points back.

Nashville, coming off a 7-4 loss at home to the NHL-worst Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, continues to pace the league with 111 points, running off a 16-3-2 record since Feb. 19 to bypass the Lightning in the standings.

The Boston Bruins, who play at Philadelphia on Sunday, is two points behind the Predators and one ahead of Tampa Bay with a game in hand on both teams.

“That’s a huge game (Sunday) obviously,” Nashville center Austin Watson told The Tennessean. “Everybody knows that. It’s a great opportunity for us to bounce back. I don’t know how much we’ll look at this, or we’ll just look to Tampa. That’s up to the coaching staff. We’ll do what we’ve got to do to get our minds right.”

The Predators want to quickly put the loss to Buffalo behind them and avoid back-to-back regulation losses for the second time second time in the past 21 games.

“We have to get our stuff together Doug Baldwin Jersey , last four games we need to play hard, play much better than we showed,” Nashville center Mike Fisher told Predators’ television network following the loss to Buffalo. “Good thing is we have a big game (Sunday), and we have to get back at it and play our hockey. We still have a lot to play for, we have to show it.”

The Lightning, meanwhile, have not only dropped out of the top overall spot in the league standings, they now trail Boston for the top overall spot in the Eastern Conference and Atlantic Division standings with a 4-5-0 record in the past nine games.

While getting back on the right side of the ledger is something for Tampa Bay to focus on in the final four games, there are other areas the team is looking at as well.

“I think we are focusing on some little things here and there,” Lightning center Tyler Johnson said. “Obviously we are in a funk and in a little groove right now we are trying to get out of, but we will. I think once playoffs start it’s a completely different thing and it automatically elevates wherever you are, and I have a lot of faith in our team and our group Stefon Diggs Jersey , so I’m not too worried about there.”

Chasing down Boston is on the Lightning’s agenda heading down the final week of the season and is in the middle of a stretch of four emotionally charged games, including the matchup with Nashville. Tampa Bay hosts Boston on Tuesday.

“We have gone in to a little bit of a lull since we clinched,” Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said. “I think these upcoming games, they bring the emotions out, especially with the distance in the standings between us and Boston and what it has been. You don’t know how these games are going to turn out but I would expect our guys to be fully invested for sure.”

It will also be an expected matchup between Vezina Trophy favorites with Nashville’s Pekka Rinne likely facing Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy.

Rinne has jumped to the forefront as the favorite thanks to a 22-3-1 run in which he has posted a 2.02 goals-against average and .934 save percentage in his past 26 starts. He enters Sunday with an overall record of 41-11-4, a 2.25 GAA, .929 save percentage and league-leading eight shutouts, but was victimized for six goals by Buffalo.

Vasilevskiy was the runaway leader at the All-Star break and though he leads the league with 42 victories, which is a single-season franchise record, he has seen his GAA blow up to 2.60 after giving up three or more goals 15 times in 21 starts since the All-Star break.

So why would Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston accept a three-game punishment and not exercise his appeal rights? There’s one simple and obvious explanation for it.

The NFL and Winston may have struck a deal.

It’s was for both sides to justify the move. The NFL Jermon Bushrod Jersey , in lieu of suspending him the baseline of six games (plus a possible enhancement for his pre-NFL alleged misbehavior), offers half instead. Winston doesn’t launch an appeal that, while ultimately futile Ha Ha Clinton-Dix Jersey , possibly would expose yet another Park Avenue Keystone Cops investigation and/or kangaroo court process.

Here’s a fact that further points to a bargain possibly being brokered: Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports that “Winston’s suspension could be increased if he fails to meet certain undisclosed requirements expected to be imposed by the NFL.” That feels like the kind of term that would be added to a negotiated compromise aimed at wrapping things up easily, while also making it even easier to whack him with another penalty if he runs afoul of the NFL’s expectations.

While the league has steadfastly refused to strike deals after suspensions are imposed, perhaps the league has learned that much embarrassment has resulted from cases like Tom Brady‘s and Ezekiel Elliott‘s. So instead of welcoming another avoidable P.R. crisis Howie Long Jersey , the league sends its message and Winston catches a break.

Bill Rademacher, a two-way player for the New York Jets in their early years, has died. He was 75.

The Jets confirmed Rademacher’s death on Tuesday.

A wide receiver and defensive back for five seasons who played on the franchise’s only Super Bowl champion Jim Plunkett Jersey , Rademacher was an undrafted free agent from Northern Michigan who made the AFL team in 1964 as a receiver. He was a backup and special teams player in the 1968 title season.

Rademacher was released before the 1969 season and played for the Patriots for two years.

Overall, Rademacher played in 58 pro games and had 24 catches for 282 yards and three touchdowns, all of his scores coming with the Patriots.

      JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (12-7)

New faces: LG Andrew Norwell Earl Thomas III Jersey , TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, CB D.J. Hayden, DL Taven Bryan, WRs Donte Moncrief and DJ Chark.

Key losses: LB Paul Posluszny, CB Aaron Colvin, TE Marcedes Lewis, WRs Allen Robinson, Allen Hurns.

Strengths: Best defense in franchise history carried team to AFC championship game in 2017 and expects to be more dominant this season. Unit has stars at every level, with DE Yannick Ngakoue, LB Telvin Smith and CBs Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye among best in league at their positions. Eight of 11 defensive starters have made Pro Bowl in last four years, including DE Calais Campbell, DT Marcell Dareus, FS Tashaun Gipson and DL Malik Jackson. Ground game led league in rushing in 2017 behind rookie Leonard Fournette, but faltered late in regular season and in playoffs. Team added Norwell in free agency in hopes of making O-line best in AFC.

Weaknesses: Lack of No. 1 receiver could be concerning. Marqise Lee (knee) out for season Derek Watt Jersey , and Keelan Cole, Dede Westbrook, Donte Moncrief and Chark have plenty to prove. Special teams need to do more to give offense better field position. Depth concerns at several positions, mainly quarterback, linebacker and tight end.

Fantasy Players To Watch: Fournette should be touchdown machine. He carried 268 times for 1,040 yards and nine touchdowns as rookie despite missing three games, two because of injuries and another due to suspension. Fournette dropped more than 15 pounds in offseason, hoping lighter load will lead to more breakaway speed and three-down role. Seferian-Jenkins could be Bortles' top target near end zone.

Vegas Says: Super Bowl 18-1. Over-under wins 9.

Expectations: Considering team returns nearly every starter on both sides of ball, it's Super Bowl or bust for Jacksonville. Team came oh-so-close last season, making playoffs for first time in 10 years and squandering 10-point lead in fourth quarter at New England in AFC title game. Still, Marrone, general manager Dave Caldwell and football czar Tom Coughlin believe team is built to win big now, relying on loaded defense that should be among best in league.

Sean Lee responded with strong words to criticism from former teammate Dez Bryant.

Tyrone Crawford felt compelled to tell the team these Dallas Cowboys won’t be in the business of dramas such as Bryant’s Twitter-fed rant early in training camp over who he felt was responsible for his offseason release.

With tight end Jason Witten’s sudden retirement after 15 years for a TV job, the Cowboys can’t defer to the franchise leader in games T.J. McDonald Jersey , starts and catches on any number of topics. Crawford, a defensive lineman, doesn’t think they can replace the 2012 NFL Man of the Year either.

”If you’re being real with yourself, Jason Witten’s one of the best ever to do it,” Crawford said. ”And if you knew him as a man, one of the best men you’ll ever get to meet. To me, there’s never going to be another Jason Witten that’s going to be around me.”

Still, the Cowboys have to figure out life without Witten’s leadership. Ask around, the answers will vary.

Quarterback Dak Prescott is a natural choice, both through leadership skills he demonstrated before replacing Tony Romo and the fact that the 25-year-old is already going into this third season as the starter.

Lee, now Dallas’ only offensive or defensive player in his 30s (he’s 31), always used to wait until the end of the week to address reporters in the locker room during the season. There’s talk of him moving that up to be more visible, and the 2016 All-Pro has left no doubt he knows things are different without Witten.

Center Travis Frederick and Zack Martin, who just signed a contract making him the highest-paid guard in the NFL Jamaal Williams Jersey , come up as well. But Frederick stops short of the idea of leadership by committee.

”Committee makes it sound like it’s a huge group of guys,” said Frederick, who started all 80 games in his first five seasons. ”Traditionally in a team like this, you have a group of captains that are a strong group of leaders, maybe five, six guys. I think you’re going to find that here.

”But there’s been a lot of guys in training. I think that Dak is one of the guys that’s most naturally a leader that I’ve ever been around in my life.”

Bryant shockingly called Lee a “snake” on Twitter while suggesting the ninth-year linebacker had a hand in the club’s decision to move on from its career leader in touchdown receptions.

Equally shocking was Lee’s response, acknowledging that he and Bryant had been at odds over Lee’s feeling that Bryant wasn’t always accountable. Lee even suggested Bryant still wasn’t holding himself accountable. It was the first time Lee had been forced to defend himself on such terms, and he left no doubt how he felt.

”I’ve been in a leadership role for a long time now and I need to take it to that next level,” Lee said. ”But there’s also, we have a core group of guys. We have a lot of guys where it’s easy to be a leader on this football team because of how many great leaders we have, all the way through, from the top to bottom.”

Crawford, a seventh-year player who has been growing into a leadership role over several seasons, wasn’t happy that the team found itself in the middle of an unexpected tiff.

”When it comes to things like that and getting focused Rashaan Melvin Jersey , I get angry and I say what I want to say and that’s what it is,” Crawford said. ”I feel like I need to say the right things at the right time and I do and that’s it.”

When Prescott became the starter because of a preseason back injury sustained by Romo two years ago, he spent half that season repeating that it was Romo’s team. Somewhere in the middle of an 11-game winning streak, though, the conversation changed. The qualities to lead were already there.

”It’s just about finding new ways to lead and it’s going to continue to evolve each and every year – every year that I get more experience and I get older,” Prescott said. ”New ways I can come in contact with my teammates, motivate them or do whatever I have to do to get the best out of them.”

Asked specifically about what Witten’s departure meant for Lee’s leadership role, coach Jason Garrett almost cut off the question.

”Witt was the guy who was out in front, the most veteran guy, incredibly well-respected guy,” Garrett said. ”But all these guys have been grasping that mantle for a long time. There’s no one guy that can lead as a player. It just doesn’t happen that way. You have to have it throughout your team.”

The Cowboys had some tangible proof during the first week of training camp.

NOTES: Dallas placed rookie WR Cedrick Wilson, a sixth-round pick, on injured reserve with a shoulder injury and signed rookie Ricky Jeune out of Georgia Tech.

FLORHAM PARK Larry Johnson Jersey , N.J. (AP) — New York Jets outside linebacker Josh Martin has been ruled out Monday night at Detroit because of a concussion.

The Jets also announced Saturday that wide receiver Jermaine Kearse (abdomen) and safety Marcus Maye (foot) are doubtful to play.

With Martin sidelined, New York promoted rookie outside linebacker Frankie Luvu from the practice squad and waived fullback Lawrence Thomas.

Quincy Enunwa is likely to move into the starting lineup opposite Robby Anderson with Kearse, who led the team in receptions last season, sidelined.

Coach Todd Bowles said either Doug Middleton or J.J. Wilcox would replace Maye if the second-year safety couldn’t play.

Luvu, an undrafted free agent out of Washington State, was among the Jets’ final cuts last weekend.

Without Thomas, New York has no players listed at fullback. Tight end Eric Tomlinson will likely fill that role.

No. 1 overall pick Casey Mize agreed Monday to a minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers that includes a $7.5 million signing bonus Tyler Lockett Jersey , the highest for any drafted player since 2011.

Detroit didn’t go into much detail about its 2018 plan for Mize, but it certainly sounds as if he’ll pitch in the organization at some point soon.

”We pretty much know what we’re going to do,” said Scott Pleis, the team’s director of amateur scouting. ”We’re going to figure that out – how many innings, how that’s going to work out, when he’s going to do it. So all the stuff will be mapped out.”

Alex Faedo, a right-hander drafted by the Tigers in the first round last year Stephone Anthony Jersey , did not start his minor league career until this season. He’s at Double-A Erie now.

In 17 starts at Auburn this year, Mize went 10-6 with a 3.30 ERA. The 6-foot-3 junior averaged 12.24 strikeouts per nine innings. The Tigers took him with the No. 1 draft pick earlier this month . His bonus in the highest for a player since Aug. 15, 2011, when pitcher Gerrit Cole agreed to an $8 million bonus with Pittsburgh and outfielder Bubba Starling struck a $7.5 million deal with Kansas City.

Mize’s bonus is below his $8,096,300 slot value. In three seasons at Auburn, Mize went 20-13 with a 2.96 ERA Mark Clayton Jersey , 324 strikeouts and 43 walks.

The Tigers also agreed with Texas second baseman Kody Clemens, the youngest son of seven-time Cy Young winner Roger Clemens, on a deal with a $600,000 signing bonus. Detroit took him in the third round.

Shortly after Detroit announced the deal with Mize, the Tigers held a news conference with him at Comerica Park. He also had a chance to go on the field and interact with players.

”A little nervous to even go play catch,” Mize said. ”I felt a part of it a little bit, which was an awesome feeling. Even stepping in the dugout Carl Banks Jersey , and kind of just seeing the stadium. I don’t know – it was really cool.”

Mize was asked about any players he may have tried to emulate growing up. His answer never played for the Tigers – but it’s someone who did go to high school in Michigan.

”There is a guy that I grew up idolizing, but he’s not a pitcher,” Mize said. ”I loved Derek Jeter growing up, because I played shortstop as well.”

Sharif Finch has lived through a roller-coaster of emotions over the past few weeks with the lowest of lows in the death of his father early in training camp John Miller Jersey , and now the linebacker is enjoying the highest of highs.

The undrafted free agent rookie from Temple has earned a spot on the Tennessee Titans' roster .

"It's something I still have to deal with every day," Finch said Monday as he sat at a locker with his name taped overhead until a permanent nameplate can be added.

"I just lost my mom a couple years ago and losing my dad ... God gives us, what's the saying? ... God gives his toughest battles to the strongest, so I'm just feeling blessed."

Finch had been in training camp less than a week when his father, Gregory "Sharif" Finch, died at the age of 61. The funeral was Aug. 6, just before the Titans' preseason opener in Green Bay. Finch attended the funeral with a family that includes his 20 brothers and sisters, and then he made his NFL debut with a sack in the third quarter.

Titans outside linebackers coach Shane Bowen said they had known about Finch's toughness and the type of young man he is since they signed him. That performance in an emotional week made everyone in the organization happy for Finch.

"It's not easy to do that," Bowen said.

Finch is one of four undrafted rookie free agents to make the Titans' 53-man roster in the final cut-down: offensive lineman Aaron Stinnie, defensive end Matt Dickerson and wide receiver Cameron Batson. The Titans open the season Sunday at Miami.

What the Titans liked when they signed the 6-foot-4, 250-pound Finch in May was his length, power, work ethic and ability to rush the quarterback. A bit raw after starting 25 of 53 games at Temple, but Finch finished his career with 14陆 sacks Justin Ellis Jersey , 32 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles and the NCAA career leader with five blocked punts.

The Titans also got to see how Finch handled personal adversity up close. Finch's mother, Wendy, died of breast cancer in 2015, and that made losing his father to a heart attack even tougher. Titans general manager Jon Robinson said he's talked with Finch several times and has a good relationship with the 22-year-old linebacker.

"He's a good young man," Robinson said. "To be able to overcome some of those things, I think, speaks to his mental toughness and his ability to push through and chase this dream that he has to play professional football."

Once Finch learned he had made the Titans' roster, spreading the news to his family was easy with a group text before the phone calls poured in.

"They were happy I got this opportunity despite all the things and all the trials and tribulations I had to go through," Finch said.

Finch, who's staying in a hotel, still has to find a place to live. He's also working through an undisclosed injury that kept him out of the preseason finale and practice Monday. He can lean on teammates such as linebacker Jayon Brown as he gets used to being in the NFL. There's also prayer.

"I pray all the time talking to God and just asking him to help me and guide me through this stressful and long situation ...," Finch said. "But I'm here now, and I'm just ready to get to work."

Notes: The Titans voted Marcus Mariota and tight end Delanie Walker as offensive captains George Kittle Jersey , defensive lineman Jurrell Casey and linebacker Wesley Woodyard as defensive captains and Daren Bates as special teams captain. ... The Titans filled out their practice squad Monday, adding WR Austin Proehl, OL Coleman Shelton, DL Deon Simon and QB Logan Woodside.

Ryan Straschnitzki felt at home as he was wheeled into a perch overlooking the ice at the Philadelphia Flyers‘ practice facility.

Below him, Flyers prospects in the same age range as the 19-year-old Straschnitzki skated in drills and in a hurry to impress, much like his days as a defenseman for the Humboldt Broncos before the bus crash that left him paralyzed from the chest down.

Philadelphia general manager Ron Hextall and other members of the organization came to visit. Defenseman Sam Morin heard Straschnitzki was in the building and popped by for a chat.

The hopeful Flyers paused during camp Friday and raised their sticks toward Straschnitzki for a traditional salute.

Straschnitzki was right where he wanted to be – at the rink, watching the game he loves.

”Just the smell of the ice coming in today brought back so many memories of your first time skating ,” Straschnitzki said.

Straschnitzki met the coaching staff and some top prospects during a break in his rehabilitation from the injuries suffered in April when a bus carrying the Broncos to a playoff game collided with a semi-trailer at a rural intersection, killing 16. Straschnitzki was among 13 more injured.

Straschnitzki was wheeled on a stretcher into Shriners Hospitals for Children in Philadelphia on May 31 and expected to rehab there for six to eight weeks. He has used weights almost daily to work on his arm muscles during physiotherapy sessions and has walked on a treadmill with the help of therapists. Sitting on a massage table, he’s used laser focus for the simple task of tying the laces on his sneakers.

”I’ve made quite a bit of progress,” he said. ”The rehab pushed me to my limits.”

Straschnitzki needs two hours in the morning just to complete routine tasks like a shower and getting dressed before he starts his exercises. He rehabs for about two hours, breaks for lunch, then has two more rehab sessions before he ends the day in exhaustion. With the same tireless work ethic he used to move up the hockey ranks, Straschnitzki said he was told he could return ahead of scheduled to his Airdrie Duke Dawson Jersey , Alberta, home for the first time in almost eight months next weekend.

His family home is undergoing a $200,000 renovation to make it handicapped accessible and the Straschnitzkis will live in a hotel for the summer until construction is completed.

The Calgary Flames have talked to Straschnitzki once he’s settled about a possible job in the organization.

”Hockey is my life,” he said. ”I’ve grown up talking about it, living it, playing it. I think if there’s a job opportunity down the road, I think it’s definitely option. Right now, though, I’m just focused on healing first and getting better. We’ll see what happens.”

The NHL has rallied around the survivors and families of the victims. Flyers defenseman Andrew MacDonald offered the Straschnitzkis use of his home and car when the family was in Philadelphia. Hextall, who stopped to compose himself at times, said the tragedy has brought out the best in hockey.

”Ryan’s an inspiring young man. He’s special, he really is,” said Hextall, a former star goalie for the Flyers said. ”He’s not feeling sorry for himself.”

Straschnitzki was among 10 survivors at the NHL Awards last week in Las Vegas at the invitation of the league and NHLPA. It was the first time so many Broncos had been together since the crash. They wore Humboldt jerseys and head coach Darcy Haugan Dion Jordan Jersey , who was killed in the crash, was honored with the inaugural Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award.

”They’re your brothers for life now,” Straschnitzki said. ”Just being able to see them, it’s like time froze. You’re in the room again, you’re just enjoying the moment being with them. We all heal in our own ways. Just being with them at the NHL awards was amazing.”

Tom Straschnitzki said he’s tried to keep his son’s spirits high during the grueling rehabilitation process.

”When he’s down, we just try to push him back up and keep him on the straight and narrow,” he said.

Straschnitzki dreams of hitting the ice again, this time playing sledge hockey – basically hockey on sleds for players with physical disabilities.

”It’s my life, so I’d love to do it,” he said.

Straschnitzki has never wanted to distance himself from the sport he’s played since he was a boy. But finding his way back to hockey in any capacity perhaps remains a distant goal.

”I know it’s going to take time,” he said. ”I just need to be patient.”

Keion Crossen spent most of Saturday doing what all NFL bubble players do: wondering K.J. Wright Jersey , worrying 鈥?and, most importantly, refreshing his phone.

"All day. Every second hitting refresh, refresh the Twitter page or whatever you got to do," Crossen said Sunday after making the New England Patriots' final roster as a seventh-round draft pick.

Then came 4 p.m. Saturday 鈥?and the phone did not ring.

"It didn't ring. That's a good sign," said Crossen, who spent the day with some teammates, two of whom didn't make it.

The cornerback from Western Carolina, once a 147-pound high school quarterback, had made it to the opening roster of a team seeking its sixth Super Bowl win this century.

"I enjoyed it at 4:01 and I'm ready right now," he said. "I was focused at 4:02 to get started for Houston week."

He added he had trouble sleeping both Friday and Saturday nights, the first night worrying and then looking ahead.

"As the business goes, you gotta move on T.J. McDonald Jersey , you gotta prepare, you can't let your mind stay in yesterday," he said. "Moving forward for me is a big deal, especially for me coming in Week 1 as a rookie, I want to make sure I know as much as I need to know going into Game 1.

"(Saturday night) I was just more focused on getting to know my opponent. That's the reason I couldn't sleep, because I wanted to know my opponent as much as I could before I get with the coaches and everything."

The opponent for Week 1 is Deshaun Watson, the mobile Texans quarterback who can drive a defense crazy. That's enough for even a veteran to worry about/

In a strange twist to the story, Crossen said he didn't tell his parents, Winnie and Thomas, until Sunday morning that he made the cut - and added they didn't know until he told them.

"They're happy parents," he said. "They enjoyed that I get to enjoy my dream. They just hoped the best for me. They did not know ... my mom cried, my dad's a little tough, so he played a little hardball. But they're happy Michael Schofield Jersey , they're definitely happy.

"I didn't call anyone . the last 24 hours I've just been waiting. So I kinda knew, I guess, when you all knew, and I'm very happy to be here and I'm ready to get started."

Crossen dressed in a corner of the locker room with three other young players. Their names, including A.J. Moore and John Atkins, who didn't make the squad, were gone when he came in Sunday morning. Asked if that was different, he said, "It is. It is, very different. But I'm ready to play, focusing on this week and focusing on what I can do to make the team better.

"It's always tough (seeing guys go). I know as a rookie class you come in together, some go and some stay, but at the end of the day I wish everyone who's not here the best and everyone who is here Jordy Nelson Jersey , (to) have a great season."

And now, borrowing a Bill Belichick phrase, it's on to Houston.

"I don't know what to anticipate," Crossen said. "Obviously still a rookie, still learning. I'm just kind of go with the flow. I know we're going to practice, I definitely know that, so only control what I can control and work hard every day.

"It's a joy to be here."

Darboh, 24, was a third-round draft pick (106th overall) in 2017 by Seattle out of Michigan and appeared in all 16 games last year with eight receptions for 71 yards. Hansen, 23, was drafted in the fourth round last year out of California. He played in 15 regular-season games with one start last year and made nine receptions for 94 yards. ... Eight players were signed to the practice squad: OL Cole Croston, QB Danny Etling, OL James Ferentz Logan Thomas Jersey , DL Trent Harris, WR Riley McCarron, DT Vincent Valentine, RB Ralph Webb and CB Jomal Wiltz. All of those players were with the team for training camp. ... The Patriots placed 2018 seventh-round draft pick TE Ryan Izzo on injured reserve.

Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden says defensive lineman Stacy McGee and cornerback Joshua Holsey will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list.

Gruden announced the injury statuses Wednesday during his annual camp-opening news conference ahead of the first on-field workouts Thursday.

McGee had core-muscle surgery, and Holsey is dealing with a foot injury. Gruden says Josh Doctson had an Achilles tendon MRI that revealed no damage for the wide receiver who has been hampered by soreness there during his two NFL seasons.

Players who are recovering from surgeries, notably left tackle Trent Williams (knee), running back Chris Thompson (knee) and tight end Jordan Reed (toe) will be integrated into camp as they’re able to ramp up activity, according to Gruden.

When the Washington Capitals faced the New York Islanders in the playoffs five years in a row in the 1980s Frank Gore Jersey , players knew everything.

They knew where Mike Bossy loved to shoot from, that Bob Nystrom was going to run them over and that they’d better watch out for Denis Potvin in the neutral zone.

”We became so used to one another we were expected to play the Islanders in the playoffs,” former Capitals winger Craig Laughlin said. ”At some point, we always knew we were going to play them.”

It’s starting to feel that way now for the Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins, who are meeting in the second round of the playoffs for the third consecutive year. Two teams playing each other over and over again in the postseason is a common theme in NHL history, especially when 16 of the 21 teams faced off in a divisional format similar to what has been in place since 2014 and is responsible for Capitals-Penguins III.

The Capitals faced the New York Rangers from 2011-13 and the Chicago Blackhawks played the Vancouver Canucks from 2009-11. Hockey has changed plenty since the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens played series seven years in a row from 1984-90, but all that familiarity still breeds a whole lot of contempt.

”For the players, it’s more difficult,” said former Edmonton defenseman Kevin Lowe, whose Oilers faced Winnipeg three playoffs in a row from 1983-85. ”The body checks are heavier, the cross-checks are harder, the slashes behind the play are harder.”

Lowe doesn’t think there are any advantages to players seeing the same opponent over and over again in the playoffs. Even on a Stanley Cup-champion team in Edmonton, there was always pressure to beat the Jets because they had done it in previous years.

Seeing the Penguins beat the Capitals on the way to the Cup the past two years, Lowe believes the stronger motivation belongs to Washington.

”They’ve made their life miserable, so that amps them up more,” Lowe said. ”There’s no real advantage to the team that’s winning those years because you know every year’s different and you thought, `Oh, we can beat these guys because we beat them before.’ It’s a new set of circumstances every time you play.”

Former Philadelphia defenseman Brad Marsh recalled similar circumstances when the Flyers faced the Rangers in the playoffs in the ’80s. New York was often dozens of points back in the standings and yet won their series sometimes.

Players also changed teams less frequently back then, so the series felt like the continuation of a never-ending rivalry that began each fall in the preseason and was renewed in the playoffs.

”You certainly develop a hate for the team a little quicker because you’ve played them so many times in the regular season leading into the playoffs Joe Montana Jersey , and if you play them year after year, it certainly does give you extra motivation not to lose to them again,” Marsh said. ”You did know how each player played or what their strengths or weaknesses were.”

By now, Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin said he and his teammates know ”pretty much everything” about the Penguins, just like they did about the Rangers a few years ago. Coach Barry Trotz joked there was ”less scouting, shorter days” before acknowledging, ”We’ll be looking for those little edges you can get when you start playing teams multiple times.”

Even back in Laughlin’s day, the scouting reports – printed out on paper – were extensive. When Marsh faced the Rangers, he knew how to defend certain players in front of the net and what to expect from an opponent’s stars.

Sometimes that’s a no brainer. The Capitals have to watch out for Sidney Crosby, the Penguins for Ovechkin and the 1980s Jets for Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier.

Rick Tocchet, who played with Marsh on the Flyers in the ’80s and was an assistant coach with Pittsburgh in 2016 and 2017, thinks repeatedly facing the same team brings out different aspects in players.

”If you were a skill guy, you’d probably go out of your way to hit a guy,” Tocchet said. ”If you really were an aggressive-type player, you’d try to make sure you’d continue to be aggressive and be willing to hit their best players. When you play a team so many times you’re willing to go out of your comfort zone to win those games.”

Having an elite team like the Islanders and Oilers dynasties of the ’80s carried with it some pressure, but beating the same opponent repeatedly in the playoffs had one benefit.

”Knowing that there would be an element of doubt in there,” Lowe said. ”If you get them down in a series and things are looking bleak where that element of doubt might creep in quicker for the team that hasn’t won. It takes a while before you can actually get an opponent to that position.”

The mental battle starts well before Game 1. Speaking from experience, Laughlin thought he and the Capitals could always go toe-to-toe with the Islanders. He figures that’s the only way to approach this kind of situation.

”You need that feeling that this is a new year, it’s a new season Laremy Tunsil Jersey , it’s a new series and why can’t we win?” Laughlin said. ”It is belief that you have a better team and a belief that you are playing better than them at the moment. I think that’s the only thing you can sort of feed off of is you have more belief in your game the way you’re playing now.”

Tre McBride realizes that few New York Jets fans knew his name as recently as just a few weeks ago. And the speedy wide receiver is OK with that.

He considers himself an underdog, a guy who has been mostly overlooked during a brief NFL career that has included stops with Tennessee and Chicago.

"I feel like any competitor would feel that way about themselves if they were kind of going through the things a roster bubble guy like myself goes through," McBride said after a recent practice. "I'm not the only one who does and I'm not the only one who'll ever go through this, so I don't feel sorry for myself or anything."

No need. Those days of anonymity might be over.

McBride has had an impressive training camp with the Jets, running with the starting offense at times while making a strong push to make the team's opening-day roster.

"Yeah, I feel like I have a little chip on my shoulder and maybe I feel like I'm underrated," McBride said. "But that's fine. That's why I'm out here with this opportunity, to show people that I can play ball at the highest level."

The 25-year-old McBride is part of a receiving corps that includes Robby Anderson, Jermaine Kearse, Quincy Enunwa and Terrelle Pryor. Beyond those four, it's unclear how many receivers will be kept among the remaining seven.

ArDarius Stewart, Chad Hansen and Charone Peake are recent draft picks, while Andre Roberts is a veteran who provides versatility on special teams as a returner. There's also Charles Johnson and Lucky Whitehead, once-promising youngsters who are coming off injuries.

And then, there's McBride, who was signed to the Jets' practice squad last December after being waived by the Bears.

"They are all pretty solid," coach Todd Bowles said. "That's going to be a tough group when final cuts come down because all of them can play and all of them will probably play somewhere in this league. If we do let some go, they'll probably get picked up."

McBride has four catches for 40 yards in the first two preseason games, and has really impressed coaches throughout the offseason and training camp.

"I'd say overall Cameron Erving Jersey , I think I've taken advantage of the opportunities I've been given," McBride said. "I think most important is that, for the most part, it's been really consistent."

McBride knows he has two more preseason games to further impress, including Friday night against the Giants.

Bowles said he expects his starters to play a minimum of two quarters in the game. With Enunwa and Pryor uncertain to play as they continue to work back from injuries, McBride could have a significant role.

"Anything can happen," he said. "I've been surprised before. I would like to believe that they've put me out with the 1s (starters) for a reason, not just because. That's really what I have to go off of, that they trust me enough to be in there with the No. 1 quarterback and the No. 1 guys out there and that's what I'm here to do, make some plays with the top guys."

McBride 鈥?whose given name is Douglas III 鈥?grew up in a military family that was often on the move. His father, Doug Jr., is a brigadier general in the U.S. Army and was stationed in places such as Hawaii, Virginia, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Texas and Maryland.

Once the family got to Georgia, Tre's mother Pamela and sister Taylor settled there with him 鈥?even after Doug Jr. was sent to his next post 鈥?so they could establish some roots.

"Adapting to new environments and the way things are in the area I'm in is something that, at this point, comes natural to me Latavius Murray Jersey ," McBride said.

He was a three-sport star at Ola High School in McDonough, Georgia, while playing on the football team as well as the basketball and track and field squads. From there he went on to play football at the College of William and Mary and was a starter by his sophomore season. He finished second in school history with 196 career receptions and was fifth with 2,653 yards receiving.

McBride's stock for the 2015 draft rose after he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.41 seconds at the NFL combine, with some expecting him to be taken as high as the third round. Six rounds came and went, though, before Tennessee took him in the seventh as the 245th player chosen.

McBride spent most of his first two NFL seasons bouncing back and forth between the Titans' practice squad, the active roster and waivers. After two catches in two years, McBride was among Tennessee's final cuts last September. He was claimed by Chicago and signed to the Bears' practice squad before being promoted and having eight catches for 144 yards in eight games 鈥?but was then waived and signed by the Jets.

"I've had great camps every year I've been in the league," he said. "When I get on the field and I get an opportunity, I can play ball. Maybe the numbers don't work out, maybe I'm not their guy, whoever it is, but it's never because I didn't show that I could play."

McBride might stick around this time 鈥?and his name is certainly catching on with Jets fans.

"I'm past everything that's happened in the past, except for what's going on right now," McBride said. "I'm kind of focusing on this opportunity and making the most of it."

New faces: DE Michael Bennett Jason Sanders Jersey , DT Haloti Ngata, TE Dallas Goedert, WR Mike Wallace, LB Corey Nelson, P Cameron Johnston, rookies CB Avonte Maddox, TE Dallas Goedert, DE Josh Sweat.

Key losses: RB LeGarrette Blount, TE Trey Burton, TE Brent Celek, DT Beau Allen, DE Vinny Curry, CB Patrick Robinson Danny Shelton Jersey , WR Torrey Smith, offensive coordinator Frank Reich, quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo.

Strengths: Plenty of depth at QB with Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles backing up Carson Wentz. Before he tore ACL, Wentz had MVP-caliber season. Offensive line could be best in NFL with nine-time Pro Bowl LT Jason Peters returning from ACL injury to join pair of All-Pros 鈥?C Jason Kelce and RT Lane Johnson 鈥?and Pro Bowl RG Brandon Brooks. Defense was mostly excellent except when it faced Tom Brady.

Weaknesses: Defense lacks depth at linebacker and is counting heavily on Jordan Hicks returning from his second Achilles tendon injury. Offensive line is inexperienced beyond starting five and backup T Halapoulivaati Vaitai. Johnston enters his first season.

Fantasy Player To Watch: TE Zach Ertz. First-time Pro Bowl pick who caught go-ahead TD pass in Super Bowl, Ertz had 74 catches for 824 yards and eight TDs. He's Wentz's go-to guy and numbers could get better with addition of Goedert helping cause matchup problems for defenses inside red zone.

Vegas Says: Super Bowl 9-1. Over/under wins 10.5.

Expectations: Eagles enter season trying to become only ninth team to repeat as Super Bowl champs and first since New England following 2004 season. It won't be easy. Division opponents got better, and conference is tougher. But team is young, talented and motivated, especially Wentz because he watched Super Bowl victory from sideline. If key players stay healthy, they could make another deep run.

Matt Dumba and the Minnesota Wild started a defining two-game stretch against the Dallas Stars with a determined performance.

They’re one step closer to a spot in the playoffs.

”That was what fueled the fire, just wanting to bury these guys,” Dumba said. ”Not let them think that they could potentially get back into this thing by getting a couple victories against us.”

Dumba scored on a power play and finished with three assists for a career-high four points, leading the Wild past the fading Stars 5-2 on Thursday night.

”It’s something we talked about, making that gap even bigger and pushing more teams down P. J. Williams Jersey ,” said Zach Parise, who scored 59 seconds after Dumba in the second period and tacked on an empty-netter in the waning seconds.

Mikael Granlund sparked the Wild with a short-handed goal in the first period , set up by the first of two assists by Ryan Suter, and Jason Zucker scored on a power play with 11 seconds left before the second intermission.

Even more important than Granlund’s goal was the effort by the Wild that immediately followed it.

Tyler Seguin had set up Benn in the slot for the lead for the Stars less than three minutes into the game, and a high-stick double-minor penalty on Wild defenseman Ryan Murphy produced a four-minute power play. Granlund scored just 12 seconds in, and the Wild penalty killers took over from there.

”It was a big turning point, and it gave us a lot of life,” coach Bruce Boudreau said.

Jamie Benn and Devin Shore scored for the Stars, who have lost eight straight road games, including six in regulation. They’re just 1-7-2 in their past 10 games overall, staggering into position for the knockout punch to their postseason hope. They host a rematch with the Wild on Saturday night.

With only four games remaining, the Stars are five points behind current wild-card spot holders St. Louis and Anaheim in the Western Conference standings. The Blues have six games left, and the Ducks play five more times. The Stars also trail ninth-place Colorado by four points Reggie Ragland Jersey , with five games to go for the Avalanche.

”Every mistake we made ended up in our net, and the chances we had we didn’t finish on,” Stars coach Ken Hitchcock said, adding: ”We’re going to compete at a very high level, and then the autopsy for us can take place.”

Devan Dubnyk stopped 29 shots for the Wild, who improved to 26-6-8 at home for the second-most points in the NHL. With five games to go, they’re up six points on the Avalanche in the race to clinch an appearance in the playoffs for the sixth straight year.

Dumba, who set a career high with his 12th goal on a blistering one-timer , and Zucker gave the Wild’s power play a badly needed boost. They had only one goal in their previous 26 opportunities until the sizzling second period. The Stars, meanwhile, were left shaking their heads about the opportunities they handed the Wild.

”I had a bonehead shot there on the penalty kill,” Seguin said, referring to the sequence before Zucker scored. ”I can’t shoot far-side short-handed T.J. McDonald Jersey , and they go down and score. That’s a tough play.”

      NOTES

Dumba became the first Wild defenseman with four points in a game in franchise history. … Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon, who has missed the past seven games with a torn right hamstring, could start skating next week, Boudreau said before the game. Wild defenseman Gustav Olofsson left with an upper-body injury and was declared questionable to travel to Dallas. … The Stars fell to 2-23-2 when trailing after two periods. … Suter stretched his career high and franchise record to 45 assists. … Stars defenseman Stephen Johns was being evaluated for a concussion after leaving in the first period with the injury. … Zucker has three goals and two assists in three games against the Stars this season. … Granlund’s was the 10th short-handed goal allowed by the Stars to match the second-most in the league this season. … Granlund scored for the first time in 15 games since Feb. 27. … Seguin has 27 points in 23 games against the Wild. … Announced attendance was 19,350, the largest of the season for the Wild.

      UP NEXT

Stars: After the rematch with Minnesota, Dallas must wrap up the schedule on the West Coast with games at San Jose, Anaheim and Los Angeles.

Wild: Following the quick trip to Dallas, Minnesota plays its final regular-season home game on Monday against Edmonton. Then the Wild finish the schedule with the same three California road games the Stars have, against the Ducks, Kings and Sharks.

Ryan Tannehill dropped back to pass and the pocket quickly collapsed C. J. Prosise Jersey , making it just like old times.

An onrushing end merely waved as he went by because Wednesday's drills involved no contact, which spared Tannehill a blow. Instead, he scooted away on his reconstructed left knee toward the sideline and encountered a linebacker, who also pulled up at the last moment.

The hits will come soon enough, but for now Tannehill is healthy and optimistic about leading a turnaround by the Miami Dolphins.

He's practicing this week for the first time since a torn left ACL in training camp ended his 2017 season before it began. A serious injury to the same knee forced him to miss the final four games in 2016, meaning he hasn't played in nearly 18 months.

"It was a long year, some dark times," Tannehill said Mike Remmers Jersey , speaking publicly for the first time since he was hurt last August.

Tannehill has received medical clearance without limitations and isn't even wearing a knee brace this week, although he plans to wear one in games.

"It's purely to prevent what started the whole train wreck," he said.

Tannehill said his return to practice stirred painful memories of watching workouts last year while sitting inside the team complex, his injured leg in a brace and propped on a chair.

"It feels amazing to be back out there," he said. "It has been a lot of work to put a helmet back on and step on the grass again. I was just telling the guys, I can remember sitting in the cafeteria looking through the glass like a little kid that's not allowed to go outside and play."

Also back were linebacker Raekwon McMillan and cornerback Tony Lippett, both of whom missed the entire 2017 season because of injuries. The entire roster was on hand, although 35-year-old running back Frank Gore was on the field only briefly and won't be involved in drills much this spring to keep him healthy.

Tannehill David Sharpe Jersey , a starter since his rookie season in 2012, has never played in the postseason. But he and the Dolphins are optimistic he can regain the form he showed in 2016, when he enjoyed the best stretch of his career and helped put the team in playoff contention before his injury.

"I feel like I kind of went on a run there," Tannehill said. "I felt like I was finally starting to play really good football, being in command of the offense and understanding what we were trying to accomplish with every play call."

With Jay Cutler as an emergency replacement for Tannehill, the Dolphins slipped to 6-10 last year. Gase is so confident about Tannehill that they didn't draft a quarterback last month.

"It's great to have him back out there," Gase said. "As long as we don't have a setback, I feel good. We're in a good place. I've seen him move around just as well as he ever has."

Newcomer Josh Sitton Forrest Lamp Jersey , a four-time Pro Bowl guard, offered an endorsement of his new QB after just two practices together. Sitton took particular note of one strike Tannehill threw.

"He rolled out after a play action and was running to his left," Sitton said. "I thought, 'That's pretty impressive.'"

Tannehill didn't miss a game in his first four NFL seasons, enduring 212 sacks behind a leaky line without serious injury. He said he's not worried about his knee holding up, and won't be thinking about it on the field.

The knee probably won't be tested with contact until the preseason in August.

"I'm never eager to get hit," Tannehill said with a chuckle. "I'd be sadistic. But I don't think about it any different than I would any other season going into a new season. It's a physical game, and I love that."

Chiefs linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis has been charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana Trey Flowers Jersey , THC and drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop in suburban Kansas City on Thursday night.

Pierre-Louis also was charged with driving without a valid license and failure to display a valid plate or current registration. He pleaded not guilty to all charges in Johnson County District Court on Friday and was released after posting $2,500 bond.

Pierre-Louis is due back in court next Thursday.

The 26-year-old linebacker, who was acquired last offseason from the Seattle Seahawks, appeared in 13 regular-season games and the Chiefs’ playoff loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Aaron Donald is skipping another set of offseason workouts while his contract negotiations with the Los Angeles Rams drag on into their second year.

The All-Pro defensive tackle’s teammates would like to see this standoff resolved before it has any chance to impact their promising season.

”Hey man Coby Fleener Jersey , pay the man,” cornerback Marcus Peters said. ”You win the MVP? Come on now.”

The NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year was back home in Pittsburgh while the Rams began voluntary organized team activities at their training complex Monday. He also skipped the start of their offseason program in April.

He is missing the first steps in the assembly of a potentially impressive defense. Peters joined the Rams in the offseason along with fellow star cornerback Aqib Talib and defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh – but they haven’t yet teamed up with Donald, who turns 27 on Wednesday.

”Aaron is a vet, man,” Talib said. ”He’s going to take care of his own business. What’s his business is his business.”

Donald is due to make $6.89 million this season in the final year of his rookie contract, and the Rams theoretically could keep him for three additional years under a franchise tag. But he has been one of the NFL’s top defensive linemen since his career began in 2014, and the Rams’ front office has claimed it is eager to sign Donald to a long-term contract.

”It’s kind of where it’s been Maxx Williams Jersey ,” coach Sean McVay said of the Rams’ negotiation with Donald. ”We’re in constant dialogue and communication with his representation. It is something that we want to get resolved. As far as a timetable, don’t really have any dates on that. I don’t expect Aaron to be here until we get a resolution to that.”

These negotiations still appear to be civil and respectful, despite their abnormal length. Donald has expressed little public frustration with the Rams’ reticence to write the check he is seeking, while McVay and general manager Les Snead have scrupulously avoided any public criticism of the tactics that have kept Donald away from his teammates.

”He and I have had good dialogue,” McVay said. ”I spoke with him last week. This feels a lot different than last year. Certainly anytime that you have something where the team comes together, to have a player that’s as important as he is here, you would prefer that. But it is voluntary. We understand that Alex Cappa Jersey , and we have a lot of respect and understanding for what’s going on.”

Donald also skipped most of last year’s offseason activities in his lengthy quest for a contract befitting his talent and accomplishments. That holdout lasted through training camp and the entire preseason while he attempted to land a new contract likely to make him the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.

He missed the Rams’ season opener after reporting to the team one day before the game. Donald still was named the NFL’s top defensive player despite appearing in only 14 games while Los Angeles roared to the NFC West title and the franchise’s first postseason appearance in 13 years.

Donald matched his career high with 11 sacks last year while causing continual havoc to opponents’ offensive lines and running games.

Although Donald clearly doesn’t need the offseason program to thrive, particularly heading into his second season in coordinator Wade Phillips’ scheme, he’s missing out on the chance to bond with his teammates while working out his dynamic with Suh. The duo could be one of the NFL’s most intimidating combinations this fall after Suh chose the Rams from among several suitors for his free-agent services.

The Rams’ new defensive players finished their first day with new respect for McVay’s offense, which took Los Angeles from worst to first in the NFL in scoring last year.

”We got an introduction to that McVay offense, and it’s crazy,” Talib said. ”There’s a bunch of movement, a bunch of speed on it. You’ve got to have your eyes in the right place.”

The Rams’ mandatory minicamp doesn’t begin until June 12 George Kittle Jersey , following three weeks of voluntary workouts.

A Browns-Bills playoff game sounds like a farfetched scenario, but Tyrod Taylor can picture it.

Taylor, the Browns’ starting quarterback, told NFL Network that he’d love to see the Bills, his own team, in the playoffs — especially because he thinks he could be the one to end a Bills playoff run.

“Things didn’t end the way I would have liked it to in Buffalo,” Taylor said. “We could possibly see those guys in the playoffs or we could knock those guys out of the playoffs. I would love that. That’s motivation I take to work with me every day.”

Last year Taylor quarterbacked the Bills in their first playoff game since 1999. This year he’s hoping to quarterback the Browns to their first playoff game since 2002. If he faces his old team Kwon Alexander Jersey , it would represent the first time the Bills and Browns made the playoffs in the same year since 1989. That year, Bernie Kosar out-dueled Jim Kelly as the Browns beat the Bills 34-30.

Removed from the turbulence that marked his previous seasons in New Orleans Joe Berger Jersey , Jrue Holiday is in a good place – and it shows.

Holiday had a career playoff-high 33 points as the Pelicans took a 2-0 lead in their first-round playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers with a 111-102 victory on Tuesday night. The series shifts to New Orleans on Thursday.

Holiday struggled at times with injuries after coming to the Pelicans in 2013. Then in early 2016 he took a leave of absence when doctors discovered that his wife, former U.S. national soccer team player Lauren Holiday, had a brain tumor while she was pregnant with the couple’s first child.

”He’s been through some tough times, the first year he’s injured, he’s on minute restrictions through the greater part of the season, and then everybody’s familiar with the situation with his wife and what they had to go through there,” coach Alvin Gentry said. ”Everybody’s healthy and in a good place now so I think mentally he’s in a good place.”

Holiday played Tuesday night with emotion he did not often show earlier in his career. He agreed that it felt a weight has been lifted.

”My family’s the most important thing to me, and with them being OK I can come back to the team freely and be able to help them out now Virgil Green Jersey ,” Holiday said. ”It’s been fun. I feel like my teammates and the organization definitely helped me out coming back from things with my family, and even the injuries, with being able to play and being able to perform at the peak I’m performing.”

Holiday also had nine assists for the Pelicans, while Rajon Rondo came close to his 11th postseason triple-double with had 16 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Anthony Davis added 22 points and 13 rebounds.

CJ McCollum, who struggled with backcourt teammate Damian Lillard in the opener, rebounded with 22 points to lead the Blazers.

Portland trailed by as many as 11 points in the third quarter but Lillard hit a 3-pointer and added a free throw to tie the game at 93 with 7:31 left. Holiday’s pull-up jumper and Rondo’s driving layup kept the Blazers from pulling ahead.

Maurice Harkless dunked and Al-Farouq Aminu had a layup to re-tie the game at 97. After Holiday’s hook shot, Harkless made a 3-pointer to give Portland a 100-99 lead.

Nikola Mirotic and Holiday each hit 3-pointers to put the Pelicans back in front 105-100 with 1:35 remaining and Portland couldn’t catch up. Fans at the Moda Center booed at the final buzzer.

Lillard finished with 17 points for the Blazers James Harrison Jersey , who were hurt in the third quarter when starters Jusuf Nurkic (left leg) and Evan Turner (right toe) left the game.

The third-seeded Blazers, in the playoffs for the fifth straight year, dropped the first game against the Pelicans 97-95, becoming the highest seed to lose at the start of the opening round.

Davis had 35 points and Rondo had 17 assists to tie the franchise record. Lillard and McCollum combined to shoot just 13 for 41 in the opener.

Lillard said he expected more out of himself.

”Coming into the playoffs, you know teams are going to lock in and they’re going to try to make the game hard for you,” he said.

Portland got a boost in Game 2 with the return of Harkless for first time since he had a minor procedure on his left knee in late March. He missed 11 games.

McCollum shook off the Game 1 struggles, hitting four of eight from the floor in the opening quarter. His layup tied the game at 21 and then he dished to Harkless for the dunk to put the Blazer in front.

Portland led 35-30 after rookie Zach Collin’s bank shot and the Blazers led by as many as nine points before taking a 59-54 lead into halftime.

Davis made a short jumper from out front to give the Pelicans a 65-64 lead. Portland was hurt a short time later when Nurkic limped off the court and into the locker room. When he returned to the bench, he was flexing his left leg. He iced his leg the rest of the game.

      TIP INS:

He came up a game shy tying LeBron James for the second-longest streak to begin a career Dont'a Hightower Jersey , behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 14 straight, according to Elias.

Trail Blazers: The third seed in the West has won its first-round series for the past four seasons. … Portland had home-court advantage in the playoffs for the first time since 2009. … Fans at the Moda Center were clearly upset with the officiating, taunting the refs with a chant in the final quarter.

QUOTABLE: ”We’ve still got two more games to win, so we’re not celebrating anything,” Gentry said.

Shaquill Griffin started 11 games as a rookie at right cornerback for the Seahawks last season after being selected in third-round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

With Richard Sherman now in San Francisco, the Seahawks have to find a long-term replacement at left cornerback. It appears as though Griffin is being asked to make the switch. In a video wrap-up posted by the team following the first day of OTAs on Monday, Griffin was shown working on the left side of the defense.

When Sherman went down with a torn Achilles last season, Griffin stayed on the right side of the defense with Byron Maxwell taking over as the starter at left cornerback. In Maxwell’s first stint with the Seahawks Joe Williams Jersey , he played right cornerback opposite Sherman. Moving Griffin to the left side would allow Maxwell to move back to the right cornerback spot he’s more accustomed to.

Additionally, fifth-round pick Tre Flowers is also working on the right side as he makes the conversion from college safety to cornerback.

Griffin appeared in 15 games with 59 tackles, a sack and an interception in his first season with the Seahawks.

After just one game, it’s already clear this Stanley Cup Final is on thin ice. Thin, patchy, slushy, rut-riddled ice.

The Vegas Golden Knights have shocked the sporting world by playing for a championship in their inaugural season. But their incredible playoff run has taken them straight into summer in the Mojave Desert, where temperatures routinely soar past 100 degrees from May to October.

With sizzling heat outside and a frenzied sellout crowd inside, T-Mobile Arena’s ice melted into an inconsistent playing surface for the Golden Knights and the Washington Capitals in the series opener.

Despite constant sprucing from attendants during timeouts, both teams chased the puck through dozens of weird bounces and unpredictable slides while Vegas rallied for a 6-4 victory.

”It was pretty bad Breshad Perriman Jersey ,” Washington forward Jay Beagle said. ”It’s so hot outside, so it’s not like it’s a surprise.”

And it’s about to get worse: The mercury on the Strip could hit triple digits Wednesday for Game 2, when the league is likely to see its hottest outdoor temperature ever recorded at a Final game.

But before any Canadians develop heatstroke at the prospect of their national game being played in a Nevada swimming pool, players on both teams were eager to make it clear the Vegas ice is absolutely playable.

”It’s the same for both teams, which is why it doesn’t matter,” Vegas forward James Neal said. ”It’s still the same game for everybody. Of course, everybody would like to play on perfect ice, but that doesn’t happen at this time of year.”

Middling ice quality can be a fact of life year-round in NHL rinks, particularly for the Sun Belt teams from Anaheim to Miami Laken Tomlinson Jersey , yet their players still thrive. It’s common to see ice deterioration in rinks at various latitudes when temperatures rise while the NHL playoffs roll through spring.

The Capitals are well aware they won’t skate onto a pristine Nordic pond when they return to Capital One Arena for Game 3 on Saturday – not with 85-degree temperatures and 70-percent humidity in the Washington forecast.

”It’s probably the time of the year where it’s pretty hard to keep the ice fresh,” Washington forward Evgeny Kuznetsov said. ”But both teams play on the same ice.”

Both coaches used the Vegas ice quality to emphasize points in their game plan that would probably be important on any surface. Washington’s Barry Trotz and Vegas’ Gerard Gallant want a north-south approach with crisp passes, minimal puck-handling and no turnovers.

It’s all easier said than done when the puck refuses to behave.

”The pucks were bouncing pretty good,” Trotz said. ”Unfortunately, the ice wasn’t great. There was a lot of chaos.”

Dan Craig, the NHL official responsible for masterminding and maintaining the temporary ice sheets at outdoor games across the continent, has been working on the Vegas ice with the in-house crew. The sheet only went down one day before the series opener because T-Mobile had a Pink concert booked Saturday night – again, something that happens in playoff rinks all the time.

Gallant hopes the ice will be more consistent after two more days to set up. Most of the Capitals reported better conditions during practice at T-Mobile on Tuesday – although the arena also wasn’t filled with more than 18,575 screaming Zay Jones Jersey , sweating people.

”I don’t know if it was the empty building or – just like everything – it needs to cure a bit, but I thought it was really good (at practice),” Trotz said. ”So hopefully, that will help both teams.”

He spent last season on the Panthers’ practice squad before being promoted and was inactive for Carolina’s playoff game.

Moore spent the first 11 weeks of last season on the Panthers’ practice squad before being elevated to the active roster where he was inactive for the final five regular-season games. Smith entered the league as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Dolphins in 2014 out of Georgia and has spent time on the practice squads of Miami (2014), New Orleans (2014) and San Francisco (2014-15). He made his NFL debut with the Seahawks in 2016 and made five tackles in three games.

He played in eight games with Seattle last year and had nine tackles.

The Cowboys have 21 members in their Ring of Honor Devonta Freeman Jersey , but Jerry Jones has elected not to add a name to the facade at AT&T Stadium since Darren Woodson in 2015. The former safety stands as the lone inductee over the past six years.

The team has several candidates to be next to enter the Ring of Honor, including Jones himself.

Jason Witten’s retirement this offseason allows for the possibility that the former tight end will go in with his best buddy, Tony Romo, who retired after the 2016 season. Jones also has talked openly about inducting DeMarcus Ware, though that now seems at least a bit awkward after Ware took a job as a pass-rush consultant for the Broncos.

Instead, Jimmy Johnson, Gil Brandt and Jay Novacek are under consideration for the next halftime Ring of Honor ceremony in Arlington, Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Johnson and Brandt’s Hall of Fame candidacies would not be hurt by their addition to the team’s Ring of Honor. Brandt annually is a contributors’ candidate for the Hall, and Johnson has made the list of modern-era Hall finalists.

Jones’ sometimes icy relationship with Johnson has thawed to the point that the Cowboys owner has no problem acknowledging his former head coach’s contributions to the 1990s Cowboys.

Jones and Johnson, who parted ways in 1994 after back-to-back Super Bowl titles, both insisted during the 1992 team’s 25th reunion in 2017 that they have a good relationship. Johnson congratulated Jones on his Hall of Fame selection, and Jones credited Johnson for his part in the Cowboys’ dynasty.

Novacek became a favorite target of Troy Aikman after signing as a Plan B free agent in 1990. In his six seasons with the Cowboys, Novacek caught 339 passes for 3,576 yards and 22 touchdowns.

LeBron James will get a couple days to catch his breath, then make his annual June journey to Golden State or down to Houston to face a team far better than his.

His eighth straight NBA Finals sets up as one of his most difficult, flanked by a largely unheralded set of teammates who force him to do much more at 33 than most other players are ever asked.

But James keeps showing he can do it, and he can’t wait for his chance to win another ring.

      Dare count him out?

”At the end of the day, the game is won in between the lines, and we have an opportunity to play for a championship,” he said after Sunday’s 87-79 victory over Boston. ”That’s all that matters.”

James dragged an injured and inconsistent Cavaliers team out of the Eastern Conference and back to the NBA Finals, where they will be an underdog against whichever team wins Game 7 in the West on Monday.

But after playing all 48 minutes in his 100th game of the season, punctuating one of the greatest series a player has ever had with 35 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists Otis Sistrunk Jersey , he sure looks capable of more.

And the Cavaliers will need every bit of it. They had to play seven games just to get out of the first round, and seven more to finish a climb out of 2-0 deficit against a younger, more athletic Celtics team. They have to be tired, and that’s no way to go into a series against Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry and the Warriors, who blew Cleveland away in five games last year, or James Harden and a Rockets team that can be every bit as potent on one end and lock teams down on the other.

The only way it would appear Cleveland would have a chance would be if James can summon his highest level, the kind that perhaps no other player can reach – and then do it three more times.

The Celtics have seen him do it, after he averaged 33.6 points, 9.0 rebounds and 8.4 assists to eliminate them in the East finals for the second straight year.

”I think we’ve played now until May 25th and May 27th the last two years, and we started on Sept. 25th,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. ”That’s every day. Every day that you’re totally focused on this Spencer Ware Jersey , and he’s gone past that eight straight times. It’s ridiculous, and he does it at this level and with the pressure, with the scrutiny. Doesn’t matter. It’s just unbelievable.”

This was the year James’ finals streak looked over. Kyrie Irving had been traded to Boston in the offseason, Isaiah Thomas, Dwyane Wade and Derrick Rose weren’t the answers as his replacement, and Kevin Love missed significant time with injuries.

And even after the Cavaliers remade their team at the February trade deadline, it didn’t look good enough. Cleveland had finished just fourth in the East, never developing the necessary cohesiveness required to be even a mediocre defensive team, let alone a championship-caliber one. They still can surrender open shots everywhere, a flaw that seems fatal against the 3-point happy Rockets or Warriors.

The only obvious advantage the Cavaliers have is James, the kind of player who can win a Game 7 in Boston with a team that was without its other All-Star because of a concussion and couldn’t shoot straight deep into the first half, with Cavaliers other than James missing their first 10 3s until J.R. Smith hit one with 2:54 remaining until halftime.

”I mean Doug Kotar Jersey , the bigger the stage, the bigger the player, and he’s been doing it for us since we’ve been here,” Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said. ”The great quote from the great Doc Rivers is you always want to go into the Game 7 with the best player, and we have the best player on our team going into a Game 7. I like our chances.”

And he’ll like them again starting Thursday even if the oddsmakers don’t. The Cavaliers were probably far better last year and could only get a game from the Warriors.

But two years ago, they also weren’t given much of a shot against the Warriors, especially after falling behind 3-1 in the finals. Nobody had ever overcome that deficit in the championship round, and Cleveland had to do it against a team that had won an NBA-record 73 games.

James led that comeback to Cleveland’s first title, and now he’s got a shot for another unlikely one.

”I’ll be available for at least four more games,” James said, ”and we’ll see what happens.”

The Minnesota Vikings are turning off the lights at the team's new practice facility south of Minneapolis after neighbors complained about the glow.

The Eagan building's north side is nearly 100 feet (30.5 meters) high and lights up with the team's Norseman logo and the words "Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center - Home of the Minnesota Vikings."

The NFL team will turn off the lights on the north side of the building between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Elandon Roberts Jersey , said Jeff Anderson, team spokesman. The shut-off time will be moved to about midnight when the team hosts night events such as high school games.

The team is "listening to the community," Anderson said.

The other three sides of the facility will remain lit every night Kareem Martin Jersey , he said.

The Vikings moved into the 277,000-square-foot complex in March. The area includes an indoor practice facility, the team's headquarters and an outdoor stadium.

Mendota Heights residents complained about the lights last month.

City officials found the building complied with city code when it received an initial complaint about the lights in February Lane Taylor Jersey , said Tom Garrison, Eagan spokesman.

"Brightness levels are the same as other wall signage in Eagan," Garrison said.

The new solution was an "internal team decision Michael Dickson Jersey ," said Lester Bagley, the Vikings' executive vice president of public affairs.

"We'd like to be collaborative and compromise," Bagley said.

Resident Nancy Commerford said the decision will help make her street feel less like a circus.

"If I wake up in the middle of the night now I won't see the lights Chris Wormley Jersey ," Commerford said. "Having them compromise like this makes my day."

The team expects the change to occur this weekend.

Two victims of disgraced national ski coach Bertrand Charest joined former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy to demand immediate action from the federal government to combat abuse in sports.

Charest was found guilty in June 2017 of 37 sex-related charges and received a 12-year prison term.

Genevieve Simard and Amelie-Frederique Gagnon spoke at a news conference Friday at the Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre in Calgary.

The former skiers want the federal government to put in place online training regarding mental and physical abuse for sports organizations. They also want independent safety officers to investigate when concerns are raised.

In addition, they say any sports organization receiving government funding must be required to have a safety plan.

Paul George said all the right things when asked if he’d consider staying with the Oklahoma City Thunder instead of leaving in free agency this summer.

”They honestly check the boxes where I needed those boxes to be checked from what a player wants and needs out of a front office Phil Simms Jersey , out of a medical group, out of teammates, out of a coaching staff,” George said Saturday, a day after the Thunder lost their first-round playoff series to Utah 4-2. ”I mean, honestly, I can’t say it any more than that. They checked the boxes on what needs to be checked.”

George’s decision will largely determine if a rare gamble by general manager Sam Presti pays off. The Thunder bucked their tendencies and went for big splashes before this season, trading for George and Carmelo Anthony to join Russell Westbrook in hopes of rejoining the NBA’s elite.

It didn’t work – or at least, it hasn’t yet. Now, the Thunder and their fans are in an eerily familiar position. Kevin Durant had good things to say about Oklahoma City in 2016, but he left for Golden State. Now, George has a $21 million player option for next season. If he declines, he will become a free agent.

It would be a huge loss for the Thunder. George Jeremy Kerley Jersey , a 6-foot-9 forward, was an All-Star who averaged 21.9 points and 5.7 rebounds this season and was among the league leaders in steals.

George’s camp showed interest in the Los Angeles Lakers last year before the Thunder made the deal with the Indiana Pacers to get him; Los Angeles is near his hometown. George said going home would be enticing, but that wouldn’t be the determining factor. He said he’d talk to Presti, Westbrook and coach Billy Donovan before making a decision.

”It will definitely be the opportunity on knowing, you know, team, personnel, and ultimately like what team will be assembled,” he said. ”That’s the only thing that it will come down to.”

George believes the team has something on which to build. The Thunder started off 8-12 but went 40-22 the rest of the way to earn the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference. Westbrook averaged a triple-double for the second straight year and Steven Adams evolved into one of the league’s best centers.

But the team never fully recovered after defensive stopper Andre Roberson was knocked out for the season with a ruptured left patellar tendon.

Westbrook said that was hard to overcome.

”I’ve always been very, very big on Andre,” Westbrook said. ”He’s one of my favorite players, just because the things he brings to the game. I know a lot of people across the world, even you guys (media) doubted Andre many Ronnie Lott Jersey , many times about his shooting and all that stuff. But to me, man, the type of guy he is, the things he brings to the game is a huge, huge impact on our team and what he brings to the table.”

Compounding the pressure on the Thunder to keep George is the fact that the players they traded to get him – Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis – have been so good for Indiana. Oladipo had an All-Star season and Sabonis is a solid contributor.

Anthony was Oklahoma City’s No. 3 scorer this season, averaging 16.2 points per game. His playing time dwindled in the playoffs and he wasn’t happy. In Game 5, the Thunder rallied from most of their 25-point deficit against Utah with Anthony on the bench. In Game 6, backup Jerami Grant actually got more court time than Anthony.

Donovan said he won’t need to mend fences with Anthony.

”I think there was a lot made of Game 5, him wanting to be out there, and I respect that, and I said that about his competitiveness. But I think going forward, Carmelo has been a total pro, and he’s been a total team guy.”

Anthony will be 34 before next season starts Rex Burkhead Jersey , but he still feels he can play at a high level. He became more of a catch-and-shoot scorer this season instead of the isolation specialist he had been. He said prefers to play his old way and said he has no interest in coming off the bench. Though he is due $28 million next season, he seemed unsure of his future.

”It’s something I really have to think about, if I really want to be this type of player, finish out my career as this type of player, knowing that I have so much left in the tank and I bring so much to the game of basketball,” he said. ”And how long I want to continue to do this, I think that’s also a thought process as well.”

In the end, for all Westbrook’s electrifying play and the two major moves, the Thunder have three playoff wins the past two years and haven’t advanced past the first round since Durant left.

”Our biggest challenge to try to figure out I think in this offseason is our consistency,” Donovan said. ”That has been a problem. That’s going to be obviously my major focus. I think it needs to be our team’s major focus.”

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello will not return to the role next season.

Team President Brendan Shanahan said Monday he was sticking to a plan that called for the 75-year-old Lamoriello to serve as GM for three years and then transition to senior adviser for four years.

Shanahan said he doesn’t have a timeline for filling the GM position.

”I haven’t begun that process and that’s why nobody has been named,” Shanahan said. ”My focus was on Lou and making a decision, taking a little bit of time right after the season ended to really reflect on that. So I’m just handling one thing at a time.”

The Maple Leafs set franchise records for points (105) and wins (49) in the regular season, but were eliminated in seven games by the Boston Bruins in the first round of the playoffs last week. Coach Mike Babcock Taron Johnson Jersey , Shanahan and the rest of the team expected more this year after getting back to the postseason a year ago.

Auston Matthews found his scoring touch amid injury woes and goalie Frederik Andersen set a franchise record for wins in a season with 38. Among the issues for the new GM: Veteran forwards James van Riemsdyk, Tyler Bozak and Leo Komarov are among the players set to hit unrestricted free agency, and Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander are due big raises in the not-too-distant future.

”I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lou for his tireless work over the last three years as general manager,” Shanahan said. ”His leadership in helping establish a cultural foundation, as well as his invaluable mentorship to everyone in this organization, has been instrumental in our development.”

Lamoriello won the Stanley Cup three times as GM of the New Jersey Devils. Lamoriello spent 27 seasons as Devils GM before stepping down in May 2015 and joining the Maple Leafs in their rebuilding effort. Now he will take on a new role for Toronto.

”It’s an unknown,” Lamoriello said. ”I’ve never been in a situation like that. So like everything else in life, you learn as you go and make the best of it.”

The Hockey Hall of Famer also served as GM of the American team that won the World Cup of Hockey in 1996. He returned to that post with USA Hockey for the 1998 Nagano Olympics.
